A Guide to Choosing Tattoo Sketches

A tattoo is a permanent thing. It will be with you for the rest of your life. It’s important, therefore, that if you have made a decision to have a tattoo done, you know exactly what you want.

You may not know it right off, and tattoo sketches come in handy here. You can sketch several different designs and then choose from amongst them and refine the sketch until you get something that you really like.

There are numerous things that you can have tattooed on. This makes it confusing to choose. Walking into a tattoo parlour and browsing through a tattoo catalogue is likely to make it even more confusing sometimes. In fact, you may go there with an idea in mind, and by the time you are done browsing the tattoo sketches, you may have changed your mind completely!

There are a few things that you can do to help you make a decision on the kind of tattoo that you will eventually have.

1. Describe yourself

Take out a piece of paper and start to describe yourself in two or three word phrases. You want a tattoo that reflects who you are. Your personality. If you are a fun loving, outgoing personality who is always on the move, a skull and crossbones will not earn you any credits. Go for something that describes you more completely. It will look really unique and like it belongs. The idea behind the pen and paper is so that you can do some reflection. Consider a tattoo like your personal emblem – it speaks for you even when you haven’t said a word, and that’s why it’s important that your tattoo sketches are a real representation of who you are.

2. Think about your life

What symbolic events have happen in your life? Are there things that you particularly treasure? Do you belong in any groups or clubs that you know you will be with forever? What’s your trade? These are important considerations. They help you to see what you hold dear and what you keep close to. Be careful though. Life’s experience is that a lot of the things that matter today may not matter 10 years from now, but your tattoo will still be there. It’s always best to go for a reflection of your passions and your personality because those will always be with you. Go for only what you are sure about and incorporate it into your tattoo sketches.

3. Choose sketches that aren’t fads

To get rid of a permanent tattoo may require laser surgery. That’s how permanent they are, and even then, they don’t guarantee that they can completely remove all the ink from under the skin. A fad is a passing thing. It comes and goes and there you are with it still tattooed somewhere on your body! Sketch what you know will last. If it’s a fashion highlight at the time, let it be; tomorrow it will be something else and tattooing it on today may cause you to attract attention for all the wrong reasons.

4. Check what’s available

There are many, many tattoos out there. And they are designed for different parts of the body. If you want to expand your ideas for tattoo sketches, you can have a look at these and you may just find something that you really like, or it may pop an idea that you didn’t initially have into your head.

5. Think Ahead

Where do you want to be in another 20 years? Will you be comfortable with people seeing that tattoo then? Will you be comfortable with it then? If you plan to become a finance major and work with people’s money, will a tattoo help you or hinder you? It doesn’t mean that you don’t get a tattoo, just get one that’s discreet and that would fit with where you want to be. If you plan to travel the world and then retire into the sunset, you have a bit more flexibility.

Tattoos are a great form of body art and self expression. Like all things that are forever though, you need to consider very carefully the choice you are making and know if you are ready to live with it for the rest of your life. Tattoo sketches will take you through various options that you can drop one by one until you are left with what represent you most.
